Our Initiatives

Turning ecological responsibility into community-led action

Parivesh Foundation aims to magnify the issue of rural and urban commons in general and water issues in urban spaces in particular to ecological equity for all sections of the society. While urban commons bring in equilibrium in human settlements, we strongly believe that with the present model of urbanization, none of the Indian cities are sustainable unless we create the much needed ecosystem for the restoration and access to rural and urban commons. With a vision for Sustainable communities that uphold the commons for equitable access of all the people to live a dignified quality of life, the organization has taken up the mission to work towards creation of an appropriate urban ecosystem led by its citizens that sustain the ideals of the Commons for a truly sustainable communities.

Student Conservators Initiative

With a vision to create a culture of conservation among school and college students who will lead the initiative with example. The mission is to prepare every student as a Conservator. We are presently working with 50+ schools and colleges in Balasore and Mayurbhanj district to promote the idea of growing one’s own food from early age. In the process, children create seed banks in their respective institutions to support their families in conservation of desi seeds in low income neighborhoods.

Urban Lakes Restoration Initiative in Balasore and Baripada We work with Gen Z volunteers over weekends to create active citizenry for the cause of environment and wellbeing of people staying in slum neighbourhoods. Under Project CONSERVE which stands for Collaboration for the Nature, Society and Environmental Restoration through Volunteering and Education. It aims to focus on the rural and urban lakes or water bodies as an ecological commons to start with. As water with its inherent nature of being an essential resource for survival for all, it will create a sense of urgency for people from all quarters. The cities in North Odisha i.e. Baripada and Balasore are two of the important cities which are not onlyplaces of habitation of large mass of people but also the lifeline of the economy of the region.

ODISHA DISASTER RECOVERY INITIATIVE

PARIVESH Foundation has consistently served as a vital grassroots responder during major crises across northern Odisha, particularly in the Balasore and Mayurbhanj region. During severe Balasore floods and the devastation of cyclone Yaas, the organization mobilized local youth networks to execute rapid evacuations, run community kitchens, deploy emergency shelters, and distribute essential ration and hygiene kits to thousands of vulnerable families in inundated blocks like Baliapal and Bhograi. Following the tragic 2023 Bahanaga train accident, PF volunteers stepped up on the ground alongside local communities to provide psycho- social care, assist emergency services, coordinate immediate support for injured passengers, and aid relief efforts. Through these consecutive disasters, PF has stood out for transforming immediate crisis relief into sustained, community-driven recovery and resilience initiatives.

WATER SECURE GRAM PANCHAYAT

Team PARIVESH Foundation is working in 3 water scarce gram panchayats in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha namely Badasingaria, Badapathara and Badafeni. The objective is to create water inclusive communities that is led by members of the village communities in local panchayat level. Context: More than half of the rural population of Odisha depends on non-mineral natural resources for their basic sustenance and economic survival. Availability of water affects food security, livelihood choices, and addressing water security is the entry point towards building a self-sustaining climate-adaptive ecosystem at the local level, i.e. resilient communities, sustainable food systems, and a conserved planet.
