NORTH ODISHA FLOOD 2026
In August 2026, northern Odisha experienced an exceptionally severe flood following persistent heavy rainfall over the upper catchment areas and substantial water release from the Galudih Barrage in Jharkhand. The resulting rise of the Subarnarekha River caused extensive inundation across large parts of Balasore district, particularly in Baliapal, Bhograi, Jaleswar and Basta.
The Subarnarekha River reached approximately 11.82 metres at Rajghat, Jaleswar, on 20 August 2026, substantially above the danger level of approximately 10.36 metres. Extensive flooding, embankment breaches and prolonged inundation affected villages, homes, agricultural land, roads and livelihoods.
The scale and severity of the present disaster are being regarded locally as one of the most severe flood events experienced in the region in several decades, with comparisons being drawn with the major flood of 1972.
The impact goes well beyond temporary displacement. Large numbers of small and marginal farmers, fishermen, landless families and other vulnerable households have lost food stocks, vegetable gardens, paddy seedlings, agricultural inputs and sources of income. The destruction of vegetables and agricultural crops has also created a serious household nutrition and food- security concern.
FROM RELIEF TO RESILIENCE
Balasore Flood 2026: A Post-Flood Relief and Early Recovery Initiative for Fishermen, Landless Families, Small and Marginal Farmers and Other Vulnerable Households
We have taken up an approach “From Relief to Resilience,” seeks to bridge the gap between immediate relief and early recovery by combining food assistance, safe drinking water, shelter and health support with vegetable seed distribution, nutrition gardens and agricultural restoration.
The initial programme will focus on eight severely affected Gram Panchayats in Baliapal and Bhograi Blocks, with an indicative target of approximately 1,600 vulnerable households, subject to final verification.

Recovery → Resilience
While immediate food, shelter, water and health assistance will address urgent needs, vegetable seeds, nutrition gardens and agricultural support will help families gradually restore their own food production. The project will therefore focus on relief with a pathway towards self-reliance, rather than relief alone.
